Mount Assiniboine - Matterhorn of the Rockies
In 2025, I made the challenging hike up to Mount Assiniboine – there I met with the unforgettable sight of this towering peak crowned with drifting halos of cloud. As the wind swept down from the north, it felt as though the mountain was generating its own weather, pulling the sky into motion around it.
Assiniboine rises sharply from a base of glaciers, its rugged slopes surrounded by smaller peaks that emphasize its immense scale. Another hiker remarked that it was known outside Canada as the “Matterhorn of the Rockies”—a fitting comparison for such a dramatic peak.
In this painting, I sought to capture that fleeting moment when the raw, angular rock met the softness of billowing cloud, a balance of strength that defines the mountain’s presence.
